This is a piece which an old friend of mine who lives in Hokkaido
(Northern part of Japan)
asked me to arrange for a wedding. I was inspired by his comment that
CANON and Rock music have a similarity,
although he didn’t actually know much about classical music. You need to
practise hard in order to master
tempo in the middle part. Please pay attention to fingering and
positioning. Have fun and do your best.

This is the theme for a popular Japanese cartoon and has become Japan’s
second National anthem. I have tried to arrange this masterpiece as
faithfully as possible to keep the atmosphere of the original piece in
this four handed version. The piece is not hard to play and suited as an
encore at a piano concert. I have arranged a six handed version which is
more deluxe with greater scale.

In Japan, Asei Kobayashi is a popular composer of commercial songs with
melodies that permeate the lives of most Japanese. The melody of Yncharika
is hard to describe but has a sound like a Russian arrangement. Kobayashi
is a genius and this masterpiece is most fascinating often to be found
being used in back ground music for pre-school gymnastics.

The original piece by Adolphe Adam, is an internationally recognised
Christmas carol with a beautiful melody. I had previously tried to arrange
this for four hands but due to the structure and range of the piece it did
not work. I have to say that this arrangement is not really up to my
satisfaction.

This is a medley of songs which were used in a very famous Japanese drama
based in Hokkaido (Northern part of Japan). Each song has personality and
suites a medley style arrangement. The composition is divided into two
parts with an intermezzo, “I Love You”, by Yutaka Ozaki, in between. I
like this drama and have a special feeling for it, because I too am from
Hokkaido.

Originally this is a Danish folk song called “Shoe Makers Dance”. In Japan
it is popularly known as “Itomaki no Uta” (Song of the Bobbin). I arranged
this piece for a piano teacher and student to play as a four handed piece,
making the student part easier. If the student part is still difficult
then you can just play the melody. Feel the changes in sound and
expression when playing.

I arranged the piece for the Penguin Café Orchestra as a piano duet. There
are some rhythm changes that are not present in the original piece
otherwise I have been faithful to the original flow. You will enjoy seeing

This is the theme song of the movie “Gakeno ueno Ponyo”, produced by
Studio Ghibli. I’ve arranged this piecehaving an image of a piano class, a
duet to be played by children and parents. The part for the parent would
be good practice for those whom have not played the piano for long time.
It may require lots practice to match each other’s playing.

When I was working on this tune, I was trying to make a duet for a piano
school student and a teacher. Some of the teacher's parts are quite
difficult and require hard work but I hope the teachers will do their
best. It’s very hard to play along together due to the nature of the
rhythm.

friend's wedding, who was in Moscow for study. The medley consists of:

pianist, some other attendees the flutist and the trumpetter) did this in
one-shot without any practice.

This is a popular tune that almost everyone has heard but the composer is
not well-known. Listening to the original music, you’ll notice that it is
so close to the perfect that no arrangement is required. Rather than
adhering to the original tune, I put in some arrangement with a sense of
fun. After the mysterious middle part, the piano duo in the latter part
reminds you of the fun of playing as a duet. I worked hard to make this
piano duo fun.

This is a popular song of chanson. I have liked chanson for long time and
I have a special feeling from this tune. It is due to thenostalgic melody
and the lyrics. A Japanese translation was done by a Japanese chansonnier,
the late Ben Kudo. It comes to mind when you hear the very pleasant
singing voice. In order to arrange this tune as a duet, I avoided the more
skilful parts and tried to make it be pleasant music to play. Please play
it lightly and snappily.

This was made for my friend's wedding. I played with two of my old friends
whom I studied with in a piano course. When I'm requested to play the
piano at a wedding, I can't really be calm or eat until I am finished
playing. However, if it comes all together as the three of us, I won't get
scared. I didn't make this tune so difficult considering I would have some
drinks at the wedding. Also, I tried to make this end within 4 minutes, so
that we can go back to enjoy the party soon after. Six hands playing can
sound noisy and messy, but it can also be seen as very entertaining. I
asked for some help from my friend who studied the piano in Moscow. Thank
you, my friend.
Another piece for a duet version was made between myself and my wife and
we are often asked to play this at weddings.

This is the theme song of the movie “Sen to Chihiro no Kamikakushi”,
produced by Studio Ghibli.
It’s a song of Life and Death led by a tense waltz rhythm. It’s one of the
great songs in Japan.
I tried to maintain the image of this song as much as possible.
Some changes have been added in the intermediate & ending parts by putting
some harmonious melody,
which worked out to be in the style of fantasia.

music based on my relaxed mood.

This is an opening song from “Saint Seiya” which was very popular in
1990s.
It is one of my favorite songs from my childhood and it’s such a great
song that is still alive and powerful to me.
I deliberately tried to make it as simple as possible to emphasize the
melody in the first half.
The original solo in the intermediate part is led by the 2nd player.
It’s quite difficult to keep rhythm through the song but the most
difficult is trying to play it
in a cool and sophisticated way.

legato as pedalling is hardly used.

The motif in Braham’s Lullaby reminds me of the sound of a church bell
heard at a great distance.
The sound provides a feeling of deep warmth as if being wrapped by the
warmth of a deep forest.
This piece was composed as an etude because the fingering familiarises the
player with a greater level
of difficulty. The legato motifs are particularly difficult requiring the
player to devise a technique
to coordinate fingering and pedalling.

I arranged this song by Japanese hard rock legend “X Japan”, faithfully as
possible to the original song.
The solo is highlighted. The second half of the main theme is expanded
into five (5) versions.
Concentration is required to match each other’s playing.

This is a chorus music composed by Hikaru Hayashi. It is composed in the
motif of “Longing for Spring”
by Mozart. The piano plays an important role and it’s joyful music in
which you can hear 2 types of melodies:
“Soshunfu”, and “Longing for Spring”, one after the other. I arranged
Candenza at the end of the piece.
It’s only 16-bars but has been overlaid with the melody from Piano
Concerto No.27 of Mozart,
which makes it skillful Cadenza.
